SUMMARY
In order to apply the 14C method to waste samples, it is necessary to estimate the average 14C/12C ratio in biomass fraction of MSW. So far, only a few studies reported these data. In this study, we estimated the 14C ratio for paper and cardboard based on a historical trend of 14C concentration in air, growth functions of trees, production and trade statistics on pulp wood, and a substance flow model for the 14C content in paper and cardboard. The 14C ratio for paper was estimated to be 104%, and that for cardboard was estimated to be 107%. Cardboard exhibited a slower response to 14C changes than pulp and paper. The 14C concentration was measured for each waste type, and the results obtained confirmed that the actual measured values and the model estimated values of the 14C concentration for paper matched quite well.
